The Department of Public Health Nursing, Shiga University of Medical Science, promotes educational programs and research to develop human resources for the improvement of health care and safety within the community, and for those who can respond to evolving health care needs.

EDUCATION

We provide undergraduate education in public health nursing, home care nursing, and global health nursing, as well as the education for graduate students focusing on research processes and research methods in order to conduct research by themselves in their fields.
Our graduates primarily work as,public health nurses, freelance community nurses, visiting nurses, and nurses in hospitals.

. PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING (QUALIFIED IN PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING)

Public health nurses provide preventative health care for individuals and the community in the field of public health, occupational health, school health, and integrated community care systems. They play a pivotal role in groups, organizations and systems for developing community health programs.

. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM TO MOTIVATE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO WORK IN THE COMMUNITY AS  VISITING NURSES

We, our faculty, provided an additional education program to motivate undergraduate students to work in the community as visiting nurses in Shiga prefecture since 2015 to 2020; initial startup sponsored by the Department of Public Health Care and Welfare, Shiga Prefecture.
This program is comprised of 1) lectures; by various health care professionals from Shiga University of Medical Science Hospital, clinics, home-care-nursing stations and the public health center in Shiga prefecture, and 2) practices at school, Nipro iMEP, a support clinic of home health care and home-care-nursing stations.

RESEARCH

Public health nursing is an academic discipline that systematically pursues health at the community level. It is a multidisciplinary and integrated academic field which cooperates and collaborates within a diverse sector that relates to people’s lives such as medicine, home-based health care, welfare, school health care and occupational health care. Our department is highly interested in society-academia collaboration in educational and research activities.

Main Research Theme

In this course, we conduct joint research not only in nursing science but also with external researchers with various backgrounds according to research themes such as sociology and epidemiology and how to approach research questions. We are also engaged in participatory research that forms a research team with patients and their families.
